OILY WASTE

Handling oily water and waste responsibly and with industry best practices

Hans Langh takes care of the treatment of oily waste, ship bilge water and scrubber wash water in our modern treatment facility, which represents the best practices in the industry.

We collect waste and water with our own equipment and deliver it safely to our Piikkiö treatment facility. Our facility is certified and operates under an environmental permit, which guarantees continuous regulatory oversight and responsible operations.

The waste we treat goes through a multi-stage process where impurities are separated and neutralized effectively. During treatment, the oily water is divided into three fractions:

  • pumpable oil suitable for reuse

  • solid, pasty oil waste, which is delivered to Riihimäki for appropriate further processing

  • purified water

In the final stage, the water is directed through a monitoring system, which ensures that the water entering the sewer network meets the strictest requirements for ppm, pH and turbidity values. Environmental responsibility is at the heart of our operations. We have certified our environmental management system to the ISO 14001 standard already in 2000, and we are constantly developing our processes for the benefit of the environment and our customers.

Responsible handling of oil waste at Hans Langh Cleaning Services

Recycling oil is extremely important to Hans Langh Cleaning Services, as oil is hazardous waste that poses a health and environmental risk to animals and humans alike. Collecting and recycling waste oil also saves natural resources, as oil is a non-renewable fossil fuel, the price and availability of which may be uncertain in the future. Approximately 30,000 tons of used lubricating oil and other waste oil are generated in Finland annually.

In 2015, 842 tons of oil waste were collected by Hans Langh Cleaning Services. The oily wash water, waste oil, pasty oil waste and fuel oil processed by the company were delivered to Riihimäki for further processing.

Most of the weight of the waste is water, and Hans Langh Cleaning Services dewaters it on its premises. This reduces the need for transport trucks and at the same time significantly reduces the environmental impact of the operation. The used oils from Riihimäki are delivered for reprocessing so that they can be recycled for industrial use as lubricating oil. As a by-product the processing produces bitumen, which is used, for example, in the manufacture of asphalt and roofing felt.

Small-scale removal of asbestos

Hans Langh Cleaning Services carries out small-scale removal of asbestos. Asbestos has been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials such as roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles (e.g. vinyl floor tiles), paper products, and asbestos cement products.

We are certified in asbestos removal. We are familiar with pressure washing asbestos-containing structures. If necessary, we also use an Ultra High Pressure device and a high-performance vacuum truck, which are cost-effective tools for asbestos removal.
