Accountability is the starting point for all operations
As a company our main area of operations is cleaning, handling and transporting hazardous materials. Therefore, following responsible operating methods and using appropriate equipment are the starting points for all of our operations.
Hans Langh Industry and Ship Cleaning Services is the oldest and longest-standing company in the industry in Finland. We are one of the first companies to build its operating practices according to quality standards, and have worked in accordance with standards ISO 14001 since the year 2000.
We cooperate closely with authorities and report back to them on our activities. Our cooperation is open. A permit must be held in order to handle and transport hazardous materials, so everything has to be in order.
We also actively work to reduce any burden on the environment. We have developed many of our operating methods ourselves and continually strive to find solutions and methods that are even more environmentally friendly. Especially the well-being of the Baltic Sea is a matter held dear by all Langh companies.
Oil spill response
Approximately 2,000 oil spills occur in Finland every year. Most of the oil spills are small emissions on land, such as fuel or lubricant leaking from cars. The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) maintains an environmental disaster alert system, which receives reports of approximately 100 larger environmental disasters at sea or on land each year.
Hans Langh Cleaning Services is taking responsibility for the environment by participating in the prevention and clean-up of oil spill damage in cooperation with rescue services. Cleaning Services has also been involved in preventing oil spills at sea in the coastal areas of Finland. Our company has a wide range of special equipment at its disposal that can be used to minimize oil spills by removing and washing the oil from the site.
From a former gas station to a responsible business premises
When you arrive at the Langh companies' headquarters in Piikkiö, Kaarina, you wouldn't think for a moment that you're entering the base of a medium-sized heavy industry company. The idyllic field landscape with its agricultural buildings and river makes it seem as if time has stopped. However, behind this scenery is a remarkably modern and responsible group of companies. Langh is one of Finland's leading shipping companies, and Hans Langh Cleaning Services processes and transports hundreds of tons of hazardous waste for recycling each year.
Hans Langh Cleaning Services operates in connection with the Alaskartano farm. For a long time, all operations were concentrated at the old Langh farm. However in 2015, operations were expanded to the former gas station area in Pohtiokuja, which is located within sight of the farm on the other side of the old Helsingintie. Soon, all of the Hans Langh Cleaning Services operations were moved over, as the desire was to move the treatment of oily water further away from the river and the fileds.
The treatment of oily water was completely concentrated indoors, which also means that the operation does not create any unpleasant odors. A special basin was installed at the bottom of the oil treatment facility, which prevents oil from flowing out of the hall in the event of an accident. An oil separation well has also been installed in the ground in case all other precautions fail.
